This Week in FUN - hibernatin'

Wanted to update everybody regarding This Week in FUN, the weekly show I do with my BFF Martin Sargent on the TWiT network each week. If you’re a fan of the show, the following probably isn’t going to make you happy, but if you hate us and think we’re the devil’s spawn (thx for the emails, btw, I absolutely adore being compared to Satan, best compliment ever), this will probably make your night:

TWiF is going on hiatus!

Here’s why - as many of you already know, Martin started his new rockstar job this week, which is awesome… and has also severely limited his free time to do things such as shooting TWiF on Friday afternoons. It’s totally probable that in time we’ll figure out how to carve out the necessary amount of time each week to restart the show, but at this point, we can’t say exactly when.

We’ve also been contemplating the future of TWiF with Leo and his team ever since the show had to switch gears in October, when I lost my driver’s license and was unable to drive to Petaluma to shoot the show in person. Netcams are great and all, but the overall quality of the show has suffered, and as a result, so have our viewership numbers. Because of the way TWiT is set up and because my hands are tied, it makes sense not to continue with a less than stellar product, for us and for you.

So we’re going dark for a bit. Hopefully we’ll resurface sooner than later. I love you all and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your support. If I could bake a cake that showed how much I appreciate your support, it would be the BIGGEST CAKE EVER, SO BIG OMG SO BIG. SO. BIG.

I hate saying this, but… stay tuned. If you have any great ideas or wisdom to share with us in the meantime, here’s the place. God save the Queen.

That Sucks!

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKiwipride

Awww.... Not TWiF!!! First I lost Conan on the Tonight Show and now, TWiF???

What's up with that?

Oh well, I guess I'll be missing Tweet Beat and True or Poo... hope you guys would be back soon.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterArni

what's Martin's new job??

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKiwipride

TWiF was my favorite show each week. I hope that you can find a way to fit it in to your hectic schedules. Or, at least, I hope you guys can find a way to fit contributing to the other TWiT show into you schedules. Sarah on N@N for Martin on TWiT would be grand.

You guys rock and I hope to hear TWiF again soon!

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSchwegler

I'm super sad to hear this, hope it returns soon.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBuchanan

Sarah. I have stuck with all you guys since the Tech TV days. Because I relate to what you do I guess. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed but I understand. And I know that this isn't the last we'll hear from you guys. Good luck with all you do and I look forward to your future projects.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterechothirteen

NOOO!! Come back soon! You guys will seriously be missed.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

Sarah, we love you BECAUSE you're the devil's spawn! I will miss the show, but you two are smart to use the time to stress your priorities (and take a pass on the British game show). When the time is right we will be here and anxious to give your new iteration a taste!

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbigshotprof

Well, I hope all works out and we see a return real soon. I love the show and really look forward to your return.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBrettla

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermark

come on guys........try doing the show in lunch breaks....?Any other way possible ? really that's too bad u 2. u r leaving all of us in a middle of a nice trip just because you thin we care abt top notch quality? its not the clarity that matters..... its the essence that matters..any ways, had a really good run......i just have to fill the time upwith something else...

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPrakash

Arrggh. This Week in Fun is about the only thing that has kept me sane during my layoff. I Understand about the car situation and Marty's new job but I'd rather have the show via Webcam on the Saturday or Sunday than no show at all. Very sad news. Mother f-er.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMike Wendler

I hated twif, at first. Now I like and now it is gone. But like you said the business is transitory. I hope to see pop up somewhere else on the web. You are made for it.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermazer

Spawn of Devil.. really I was think mother maybe sister.... Not child of Satan... who would have thought of that...

I really enjoy the show hope it comes back when you can do it the right way...

Good luck Sargent of the new job, it's about time.... :)

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRick Stouder

devil's spawn my a$$. Sarah you are a Goddess. yuor smile makes the world better and your wit is to die for
i love everything the two of you have done. have faith in your talent and have faith in what ever power a Goddess such as your self gives power to. keep your chin up, eyes on the prise and always let your heart lead the way.

You and Martin are two of the greates people i have ever had the honor of laughing with, getting angry with. though we have never met i think of you and martin as my friends, you guys in what ever you do will always have that in most all your fans

thank you so much for all the fun

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWill_Stutler

:-( But hey, you gave it a good shot and that's what counts. It doesn't count as much as actually keeping a show on the air but it's a close second. Or third. Fifth max.

Just know that you guys were great and not just anyone can put together a web show. Oh, wait, yes they can. What I mean is yours was special. And not in the retard sense of the word. Well, OK, once in while it was pretty retarded. Most weeks really. And yet, still I loved it.

It will be missed.

Briefly.

I may already be over it. What was your show again?

Anywhooooo.

[Seriously, all the best Sarah. Know you are loved and supported. The rest is just details.]

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFreddy Mac

This is a truly crappy week. We lose Conan, the Senate, our 1st amendment rights are given to MegaCorps and now TWiF. I'm sad. Please come back guys.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRoberto

Sorry to hear this Sarah, I always looked forward to kicking back with you and Martin on Friday night (here in Spain). Hope to see you soon...

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJimmah

We'll be here when you guys get back!

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJCSilk4

Sad. I hope Leo finds some way to bring you into other TWiT products.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPoochJensen

Say it ain't so! TWiF was the highlght of all my podcasts, a time to cast my troubles aside and have a few laughs. I feel like I got to know you and Martin in the past year since you've been on. I understand the need for the move but I really hope that hiatus does not turn into permanent status.
Thanks for everything. Miss it already.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commentertrudscore

And we thought 2009 sucked... This is not starting off twenty ten the way I'd hoped.

Best of luck to you and Marty. At least we had Paris.

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStFarmer

I can't work as blue as Mr. Sargent does, but I live in San Francisco, I have a minimum wage job that would allow me to have Fridays off, and I have no points on my license. I've been online since '96, have battled against a video gaming addiction more times than I'd admit, and don't exfoliate nearly enough, but I'm wordsmith, a cat guy, and a gentlemen.

Maybe there would be room for TWIF.1 until the stars realign for you and Mr. Sargent to reignite the lighthouse lamp which is TWIF. Or maybe my common sense and propriety are just 404.

The Bean Bag Cafe on Divis and Oak has a great sandwich called the Petaluma (coincidence?, i think not!), maybe there could be an interview set up? I'd love a chance to prove that I'm on the level.

Stranger things have happened,

just a comment late at night... Comcast bought TechTV which ruined TechTV. Comcast planned to buy and actually bought NBC which "fired"or "bumped" Conan O'Brien. Then TWiF goes on hiatus.

in the end.. blame Comcast... *curses*

January 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterarni

Sarah and Martin,

I too lost my job last year and was out longer than expected. I found the TWiT podcasts and found I had something to keep me going and looking forward to each week. TWiF is and will be my favorite shows and I'm sure you two will find a way to come back to your faithful listeners. When you come back, I hope you can bring in some of those great friends and let them share in the fun too.

If you ever take the drive up to Tahoe, let me know. I'll bake a custom designed cake for you and let you know where some of the best local wineries are up here off Hwy 50. Just give me a shout @LunaLocoLobo.

Hope to maybe hear you on one of the other TWiT shows now and then but, just to hear the laughter and fun.

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDennis

I will miss TWIF and hope that you both will be back soon. Good luck on your new job Marty!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHollysville

Twif is literally my favorite podcast ever! I've listened to every episode and I just want to thank you both for all the laughs and good times!

I know the transition to not being in the studio was hard, but you guys have really been making it work! The chemistry between you guys is perfect and it was always such a treat to listen to you. I've been watching since the Tech TV days and I'm really gonna miss listening! Hurry back and stay on the airwaves! I loved you on Net@night, Sarah and I loved you on Cranky Geeks, Marty!

Take care!
-Andy :)

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

Like any other geek, we are all sad. Cmon theres got to be a way to squeeze in. It's all about FUN right. Cmon!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAlvin Lizada

I have enjoyed the show since the first episode. It will be missed.
Remember, everything happens for a reason. So you Sarah get out there and make us proud. And keep us informed and entertained.

Thanks for all you do.

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSlipdisc

Conan and TWiF both taken away from me on the same day... now I officially have nothing to live for. :(

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

This makes me sad, I hate to see TWiF go!

Thank you and Martin for a year worth of FUN, and all the best for your new ventures!

Worst TWiF EVAAAARR!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterProesterchen

Hopefully you guys can figure it out. Twif was one of the shows that always made me look like a fool, walking through chicago laughing like crazy (not that anyone notices in the city, but thats besides the point). Sarah- if you show up on N@N, I'll listen to it much more often. I have lots of commuting, and not having Twif is gunna make it that much longer :(

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDerek

For want of a horse, the kingdom was lost!

Anyway, you'll be great whatever you decide to do. Best of luck to you.

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterincandenza

Sarah, you and Martin are some of the funniest people I have ever seen. And some of the nicest, too. I will really miss TWiF and all the hilarity and comfort it brought to my weekend. Thank you so much.

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterEric Geller

Boo! This makes me really sad! TWiF is the best show on the network! Well I hope the hiatus isn't too long. Wish you guys the best!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMike

Sad news :(

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermemo

Oh no! Well I'm glad that Martin is now employed.

Did you lose your license because of the brain stuff? Will you be able to get it back?

Here's some brainstorming ideas about how to bring TWiF back:

- Could you get another person to host from the Cottage?
- The portable rig from CES seemed to work well. What if Colleen made a remote rig just for you?
- I don't know if you want to change the format around, or make a new show, so it's shorter, but multiple times a week? Like you and Martin talk about one crazy story for 10-15 minutes in each "show".

We'll stay tuned!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJMartin

This totally ruins my Friday! Not cool!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterScott

I say POO.
I agree the quality just isn't the same without you guys at the cottage, so maybe this is for the best. We shall see.
Just please return at somepoint, and keep the fun and games - most entertaining TWIT.tv show BY FAR.

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWeb8337

I hope you find in these comments that the people that matter love you guys. When we're down, we could count on your show to pick us up. And you're no demon. More like a drunken angel of joy.

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteredu

Nooo! I agree with everyone else TWIF and Conan in one day, that hurts.

It is good to hear that Martin has a job now but I think we all agree that a low quality show is much better than no show. As they say in the business "content is king", and you two have that mastered. No one is really that concerned with webcam video or bad audio, if it is going to possibly cancel the show.

Maybe with enough Internet support we can convince you two to save the show. It worked with Chuck, Conan will hopefully have another job somewhere soon, and hopefully the same is true with TWIF.

TWIF was by far my favorite show, but I guess now I will have to fill that hole with Gibson's show while I update kernels and defragging my hard drive. And there is not a more lame combination than that. Well maybe, NSFW.

All joking aside, if this is the actual ending of TWIF, I hope that it is just another stepping stone for the two of you and we will see bigger and better things out of Sarah and Marty.

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

Sarah, you at least need to go back to the cottage to get the "ATTN: TWiF" Christmas card I sent you guys!

But while this news is TOTALLY SAD, I'm glad for you guys being all employed and everything! I will continue to follow the work of both of you!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

What am I suppose do now?

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCanadian Guy

Sarah (and Martin)

Will miss having you both on weekly. TWiF was a highlight of the week every week..

Understand that the "day job", the one that pays the bills, has to come first.

Understand the scheduling issues. When you and Martin were talking about his new job live, I thought there'd be issues, but was hoping you'd both figure something out before a hibernation was needed.

Since you asked for ideas (hope you meant it) I have a few.. May not be worth while, but here goes..

1. Is there a bar you and Martin have a good relationship with? Maybe host TWiF every other week in a corner of a bar using Colleen's Portabella? On odd weeks, put out a few best-ofs until scheduling issues are resolved? Maybe have a few "True or Poo" marathons where the last segment is a new "True or Poo" segment recorded just for that show?

2. I'm sure you, Martin, and Leo already looked at the TWiT.TV schedule on Saturday after "The Tech Guy", and decided that you and Martin couldn't get up there, or the cottage wouldn't have staff when you both could.. but I wouldn't mind TWiF on a Saturday evening.. Maybe that would solve the transportation issue as well, Martin could pick you up?

3. Keep Skyping in TWiF when you can.. it doesn't need to be live.. take a few extra minutes to work out video and audio issues when you both have the time to do so.. when you and Martin have time to record together, and there's someone at the cottage to run the board, record.. It's This Week in FUN.. Keep it ... fun. :-)

After the roller coaster you've both taken turns on the past year + a few months, I'm happy that you're both finding happiness, health, and steady employment.

Hope to see you both back soon.. If not on a regularly scheduld TWiF, maybe on TWiT once in a while?

I'm glad Martin got a job but it sucks that the show is on pause. My Friday after work commute was so fun every week because I'd put on the TWIT iPhone app and listen to you guys do the show live.

I'll be here waiting for the show to return. Thanks!

LONG LIVE TWIF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDave Friedel

Here's an idea! Call Conan. He's not busy! It could be TWiFpC (This Week in Fun plus Conan)

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDave Friedel

Ah, sorry to hear this. But it's completely understandable. Keep being awesome!

January 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

Dear Sarah and Martin,

While your decision is completely understandable, I just wanted to add my two cents by saying that as someone who listens to a helluva lot of podcasts having to walk my dog twice a day, TWIF was a very welcome break from the craziness and often hectic nature of real life.
