My Travel Record is Humiliating.

Recently, a friend of mine told me about a running competition she has with her husband to see who can visit the most countries beyond the USA, their country of residence. They both travel a lot for work so they’re both in the thirties (he just surpassed her with a trip to Lichtenstein). Then she laughed and said “but you’ve obviously got us both beat, you travel hobag” and pushed me out her 4th floor living room window. Miraculously, I suffered nary a scratch or scrape…only a fractured ego.

Just wanted to see if you were ever going to put down that pint of New York Super Fudge Chunk and pay attention.

All of the above story is true except the violence part. I pride myself on my wanderlustic (made it up) tendencies, but when my friend said she’d been to thirty-something countries, that number sounded pretty high. So I thought I’d list all the countries, beyond the great US of A, that I’ve been to in my life. And I decided to do it in the form of a blog post because I have no idea how to not live in public. I’m also listing them in order of visit. I’m also obviously excluding multiple visits to the same country, even if the destinations within that country varied wildly in distance or type of visit, which sort of sucks, but those are the rules. I’ve also excluded my 1998 visit to Puerto Rico, because of the whole “self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States” thing.

  1. Mexico
  2. Switzerland
  3. Italy
  4. Germany
  5. Austria
  6. Canada
  7. The Netherlands
  8. France
  9. Australia
  10. England

  19. Vietnam
  20. Laos
  21. Cambodia
  22. Indonesia
  23. India
  24. Brazil
  25. Argentina
  26. Japan

Twenty six. TWENTY MOTHERFREAKING SIX?! I cannot believe I’m getting my ass handed to me by a couple of working stiffs. I mean, they’re totally awesome people and deserve all the happiness in the world, but you get my point. I’m going to go cry into a bottle of wine from New Zealand, a country I haven’t been to yet, now. And convince myself that both my friend and her husband are liars. And reconsider hanging out with them. And maybe start planning a whirlwind tour of every corner of Africa.

Enjoy your ice cream.

How much of the US have you visited? I've always thought I'd travel overseas after I see everything interesting in the US first. I drove a truck for two years and got to stand in 49 different states, parts of Mexico and Canada, and still want to see more. Might be cheaper too.

You have nothing to be ashamed of, Sarah. You've been to a LOT of countries. A LOT. Living in Finland, I've just been to Japan, Sweden, Estonia, UK and the airport at Amsterdam which doesn't really count since I never stepped outside really. And I'm like 31. SO sad, I know. So yeah, 26 is A LOT at least for me.

The wine really does taste better when you're drinking it here. Next on the list?

April 29, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Hate to break it to you, but it's only actually 24 countries! England, Scotland & Wales don't count as three separate countries, they are all regions (States if you will) of the United Kingdom.

It would be like counting New Hampshire, California and Georgia as three separate countries - they all about as different from each other as you can get, but still part of the USA!

I have only been to:

Canada
Mexico
Spain
China
Australia
New Zealand
Ireland
Finland
Switzerland.

And a few others I can't think of at the moment. Buy you are doing great, I doubt I will see 26 countries. :) Love the new word. Wanderlustic. :)

Yes but you must consider that they are counting working trips, where they probably saw the local airport, Starbucks, hotel, convention center and not a whole lot else. I followed your travel blog religiously for the whole year and you guys REALLY saw A LOT of each country you visited. I was surprised when you listed them in the FAQs at the end and it was only around a dozen. It seemed like so many more! And your recent trip to Japan - you really got around, honey, not just hanging around Tokyo the whole time! You have gotten to do far more than most people in your few years on this planet, so be thankful, young lady! And don't forget to renew your passport when the time comes and keep getting out there! I love your travel blogs more than anything else you post. And I am totally going to that deer park in Japan.

Sarah you can include that trip to Puerto Rico, according to The Traveler's Century Club, a governing body for places you've visited.

http://www.travelerscenturyclub.org/

I've been to:

United States
Mexico
England
Israel
Spain
France
Portugal
Italy
Vatican City
Netherlands
Germany
Costa Rica
Peru
Bolivia
Argentina
Chile
Brazil
Colombia

21 if you include Hawaii and Puerto Rico (which are both on the TCC list)

I was going to go "Yay! Scotland! Where did you go?" because I'm Scottish. But then I saw the comment that said we're not a country and had to explain that was wrong. We have a flag, a parliament, our own laws, our own government, and a Wikipedia page that starts with the phrase "Scotland is a country...".

We're simply one part of a group of countries known as the United Kingdom. Which is actually a group of a group, since Scotland is part of Great Britain (Scotland, England, Wales) and the United Kingdom is actually Great Britain + Northern Ireland.

Confused? Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminology_of_the_British_Isles

So Sarah, your count is right.

And my list, in order of me remembering...

1. England
2. Wales

7. Germany
8. Belgium

That is a lot of traveling. I have never traveled more than 40 miles from the city I was born in. I'm 23. I come from a poor family so the thought of spending money to "vacation" in other countries just seems so strange. I will try to maybe travel to some of the other states if I can ever afford it, but I probably won't go to other countries.

Sarah, that's a ton! I'm 21, which isn't very old, but compared to most people my age, I've only been to Canada, and that's it. Almost elsewhere, but things changed. I've been a lot of places in states near where I live, but even that that's not much. You've got your work cut out for you, missy! Be proud! It's not always about numbers either! It's about learning, seeing and especially DOING!

Hm, you made me think about where I have been, and it's actually more countries than I thought. But I live in Europe so that's probably an unfair advantage ;-). But I've been to about 25-30 US states...

Anyway, looks like I've been to 39 countries excluding my own country, countries where I've only seen the airport & environs and places like the Vatican... I'm 27 by the way.

You're going to hate the fact that I visited more countries in three months than you ever have. I backpacked through Europe last year and changed cities every 1-2 days to get the most out of my 3-month Eurail pass.

I don't at all consider myself better traveled than you. In fact, I asked you about your travels when we met during Macworld a couple years ago, because I so admired your trip (and your podcasts of your trip).

I think what we can gather from this is that it's the quality, not the quantity of the places we visit. I spent mere hours in Switzerland, Bosnia, Slovakia, and Luxembourg, and shouldn't be allowed to count them even if I have technically been there. It definitely shouldn't count the same as your trek through Asia.

June 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

If we add just the countries I've spent at least one day in, it's only 21.

Canada
Mexico
England
Portugal
Spain
France
Italy
Slovenia
Croatia
Belgium
The Netherlands
Germany
Denmark
Sweden
Norway
Finland

Hungary

You should count Puerto Rico. Having been born and raised there, now living in the USA I can tell you that my home; part of the USA as it might be, is still a separate country. Not to be a braggart but here is my list:
1. Puerto Rico (yea yea yea - born there but I have been there after I moved to the USA).
2. Mexico
3. Germany
4. Italy
5. France
6. Spain
7. Switzerland
8. Austria
9. England
10. Croatia
11. Albania
12. Bosnia
13. Denmark
14. The Netherlands
15. Macedonia
16. Montenegro
17. Turkey
18. Greece
19. Egypt
20. Israel
21. UAE
22. Gabon
23. Zaire (back when it was called that, now the D.R. of Congo)
24. Congo
25. Kenya
26. Uganda
27. Cameroon
28. South Africa
29. San Marino (land locked country inside Italy)
30. The Vatican
31. Sierra Leone
32. Panama
33. Canada

P.S. Having been to Africa, there is really NOTHING to see there. I did 99% of that travel on behalf of the U.S. Gov. as a soldier and of all the places I have been the least interesting in any was shape or form have been the countries of Africa.

You're right to think of New Zealand next (the only country on my list that's not on yours yet), as it's a very different place/experience than Australia.

As for how to count them all: I always list two of my favorite places, the lovely islands of Corsica and Sardenia, as being separate from France and Italy, although technically they aren't, so wha'do I know?

I am planning to do a "worldtrip" in a couple of years when I finish uni and I remember you from the Screen Savers days. I one episode they mentioned that you went on a worldtrip and I remember back then that you posted stuff on your website about the trip. So today, I decided to come back to the website to see if I can find some tips and to my surprise you post something about traveling. What a coincidence.
Do you remember how much you budget was for the trip and how many months did you travel?
