Get Into the Groove

When I was in high school, I was convinced I wanted to make music videos for a living. I watched a lot of MTV (when it was still a channel that showed music videos) and being part of an industry that made eye candy mesh with pop songs seemed like the best job in the whole wide world. Turns out my interests changed a bit over the years, but I still credit music videos for getting me started.

A few of my old faves (all clever, weird, and unique):

1. "Don't Come Around Here No More"- Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

2. "Tonight, Tonight"- Smashing Pumpkins

3. "Right Now"- Van Halen

4. "Freedom 90"- George Michael

5. "Losing My Religion"- R.E.M.

On a related note, my buddies at Low Water Music put together a terrific video for their song "Strange New Element." Yours truly was involved, as were a few of my talented counterparts. See if you can spot us all!

Wow... That list makes me feel old... And I'm only 24.

I'm supremely disappointed that Britney Spear's "Toxic" didn't make your top 5. I can only hope it's your number 6th or 8th favorite. See-thru diamond encrusted body suits is ART dammit! Anyway, here's another good one: http://www.astralwerks.com/royksopp/remind_me.html

Good list. Makes me feel even older. I remeber the days when we had no Em-Tee-Vee. All we had were reruns of Good Times.

I started watching MTV, DAY ONE! A few of my fav's?

The Fixx - "One thing Leads To Another"Duran Duran - "Wild Boys" (very Mad Max)A-ha - "Take On Me" (great video)The Pharcyde - "Passin' Me By"Tom Petty - "You Got Lucky" (loved that car!)

If I've read correctly, Sarah and I are the same age, so she should know where I'm comin' from.

That Strange New Element video truly is the stupidest video I have ever seen. The kids in my kindergarten class have made better videos than this, and they are only 5.
April 19, 2004 | Unregistered CommenterDisappointed
Sounds like we're about the same age, P-Tip! "Right now" by Van Halen had me watching long and hard, especially because of that interesting video they had for it. Ditto for "Beautiful Girl" by INXS (which, BTW, does like it was fodder for Christina's "Beautiful"...or whatever the name of that single is..). I think the INXS video's that clear in my head because that was the first time I'd actually seen an implant!

Peter Gabriel's "Steam" had some cool graphics, Duran Duran's "Come Undone" and almost all their videos from the Wedding Album CD were interesting, and I daresay - Michael Jackson had some neat videos as well. I remember Naomi in the "In the Closet" video - interesting stuff!

I agree about MTV...I wonder what happened there. The MTV signal where I grew up went on to get some "local programming" and I never saw Nonie and Wu and Danny McGill again. I heard some of 'em went on to become segment producers and the sort.

I'm going to try and make it to a TSS screening sometime this week. Hope to catch you then!

Till later, take care..Sujeet

Britney spears...come on. Anyone can make a video with computers, try to shoot one all on your own!

I gotta make one of Carlos' picks my #1: Take on Me by A-Ha. Absolutely love it...other random favorites include Devo - Whip It, Talking Heads - Burning Down the House, Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer, and and and...hmm, that's all I can think of fo' now

U got to listen to more rap/hip hop :)

Pretty cool! Practically the whole gang was involved. I must know if that was Chris Leary and Sumi Das in the plane. If so, Sumi or whoever was the highlight to me. The skater girls had me laughing with their calm methodical ways. And there is something special about your expressions girl. Could this be the beginning of a movie career? :) Overall I really loved the video and I wish everyone the best.

Strange New Element is my favorite music video of all time as it features the most beautiful and talented Sarah.
April 19, 2004 | Unregistered CommenterJames
Okay, I'll play your game. :) Chris Leary, Sumi Das, Laura Swisher, Morgan Webb, Cat Schwartz, Sarah Lane, Heather Frank. I get the feeling I missed quite a bit including possible interns, but that's the best I can come up with. :D Stay cool everyone!

"Don't Come Around Here No More" Is that the video in the desert where they find a tent with instruments and video games? That is a cool video!

I miss the old MTV. My friends and I would watch it for hours.

I'm surprised at some of your favorite picksSarah, All of those videos are from my generation.

You Rock!

Great choices! Although Van Halen was never the same without Diamond Dave, "Right Now" is still pretty good.

Great work ladies of TechTV!

Hello? No one noticed Sumi Das! She was a main character!!

: ) Good to see her again. I look up to her a lot (and all of the girls on TechTV) as a woman in technology.

Interesting video. Sure, it's low budget, but it's still cool...

It's more entertaining that some of the high budget videos that I've recently seen!

Sarah wasnt low water the band that played during the call-for-help-a-thon. I cant name everyone who was in the video but i can name all the ladies blowing kisses and flashing smiles lol. Still good video and i like the sound of the band.

I remember my music from my early days *tear* they are so long gone, even though im only 19, I still remember those videos to. I use to love Tom Petty but wasnt to thrilled with Smashing Pumpkins they use to freak me out, but then again so did that freaky mirror from Snow White (the live action version i mean). Oh well later all

Jason aka The Dark Magician
That was one stupid video! I crap better stuff than that.
April 20, 2004 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Sarah - Just wanted to complement you (and Kevin) for the fantastic show you did last night on TSS (4/20/04). If anyone ever had any doubts about your professionalism, screen presence, and technical knowledge, they were all erased last night. You were as polished as any veteran performer and were a joy to watch. You two need to do the hosting duties on TSS. Do not let yourself be pigeon-holed into nook duties. You are far too talented for that.

You and Kevin OWN the Screensavers!

Billy Corgan is just beautiful with his music, especially with, "Tonight, Tonight" Some other good songs by Smashing Pumpkins are, "Stand Inside Your Love", "1979", "Disarm", and of course, "The End is The Beginning of the End". I'm much of Smashing Pumpkins fanboy. The music video of, "Tonight, Tonight" had lots of eye candy, including some black and white, and that clay moon that was beautiful. Billy Corgan is very much sensitive in these songs in which makes them so beautiful and emotionally connecting.

This is the kind of music that I love so much because of the sensitivity and spirit of the singers. Anyways, before I go blathering about how much I love SP, I gotta remember I'm posting on Sarah Lanes blog. When you were a teenager, teenagers usually connected with music as they were growing up. I'm still a teenager :).

Sarah- I was truly impressed with TSS last night. Leo and Patrick have nothing on you (and Kevin). The two of you should have the hosting duties more often. I remember each of those videos. Liked the Low Water video. I found all my favorites, Sumi Das, Laura Swisher, Cat Schwartz, and yourself. (Now that would be a true TSS Dream Team)

Great taste in music! I'm very impressed.
April 21, 2004 | Unregistered CommenterPhil
Nice taste in music, Sarah.

Yeah, I remember the old MTV as well. My music style back then was Phil Collins, Van Halen, Boston, Robert Palmer (ya gotta love the Italian suit, sarah), ZZTop, just to name a few.

The Digs Roadshow is headed to my town. Yay. Though, technically, the Cool Springs Mall is 20 miles south of town. Look forward to it.

Kevin, "Don't Come Around Here No More" was the one where Tom Petty was dressed like the Mad Hatter, telling Alice to... well, not come around there no more. Great list, Sarah. All among my favorite ones.

Other videos I love(d):U2 - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill MeThe White Stripes - Fell in Love with a Girl (whee, Legos rule!)Chemical Brothers - Star GuitarGreen Day - When I Come AroundSum 41 - Still Waiting (mainly for the intro with Will Sasso)

And, of course, the one with the guy running whilst ablaze, and most other videos directed by Spike Jonze are grrrreat :)
April 22, 2004 | Unregistered Commentervakky
Oh, and the Strange New Element video was cool! Sumi looked awesome :P
April 22, 2004 | Unregistered Commentervakky
The Smashing Pumpkins make some quality videos :)

My favorite music-related video project is still "Tommy" by the Who... For *regular* videos, I always enjoyed Robert Palmer's sense of Humor.. The Low Water video was Good... any chance we'll see it on one of the music channels?

"Take On Me" - A-ha Awesome music-video.
April 23, 2004 | Unregistered CommenterArchang3l
MTV sucks ass. That's all. Wavin' a deuce... peace.
April 23, 2004 | Unregistered CommenterJoe Tha Junky
Sooo...that was a good video...=S

I have to say, having all those TechTV people in it made it look cheesier than it needed to be. And what's with Cat's purple hat?? That thing is ultra-lame! She looks like she just got back from filming another sequal to Austin Powers with that thing on. Don't say anything to her about it, just steal it and run it through one of those media distroyers Kevin reviewed last week.

Tonight, tonight is also one of my favorites. Too bad its not on Itunes. I wish there was a better way to research past favorites. The billboard hot 100 on itunes is good when its working, (almost never). The other favorites I downloaded were father of mine-everclear, everlong-foo fighters, found out about you-gin blossoms, and tainted love by soft cell.
