A Swarm of Bees.

Did you know that my colleague Martin Sargent's greatest fear is killer bees? I'm not talking about a little fright here and there. The man is terrified of bee swarms, and carefully follows news on killer bee attacks around the world.

I personally have no problem with bees. I've been stung here and there throughout my life, and while they're really annoying and itchy while they heal, I have bigger issues with mosquitoes.

Which brings me to my gripe of the week: I'm having a mosquito problem in my house. IN SAN FRANCISCO! There are no mosquitoes here! Or so I thought until recently. I got sucked pretty bad by a bloodthirsty vampire not too long ago, and I wrote it off as an unfortunate fluke for my shoulder. But then one morning last week I woke up to find 7 bites scattered across my body! WTF? I didn't even hear the little buggers buzzing around my ear. Oooo, doesn't it just make your skin crawl thinking of that little buzz? Anyway, I can't for the life of me figure out where they're coming from. I've been keeping my windows closed around dusk, but again this morning I saw a little guy fly past my eyes, so I know they continue to cohabitate with me. I hate them all and want to evict them. Be gone, horrid insects!

Today's pic gives me that fuzzy yesteryear feeling. Patrick had the cubecam, and we couldn't stay away! I wonder if Annabella will inherit Megan's bubble skills?

I've been noticing little millipedes sneaking into my apartment. My roommate says they have a mildly poisonous bite. I never saw them when I lived in Memphis, but now I see them in my apartment in Birmingham, and they give me the heebie jeebies. Egad!

I'm going to have to disagree with you on your bugs theory: I think that bees are worse than mosquitos. That high pitched buzz is nerve racking to be sure- but I'd be far, far more disturbed if when I turned on the light to try to hunt down the buzzing vermin I discovered that it was a BEE. Yes, very displeased indeed.

C'mon, if you were forced to pick between a swarm of mosquitos in your house and a swarm of BEES, are you really maintaining that you'd go with the bees?

YOu think mosquitos are bad. Try chinese ladybugs, noted for having a yellow rather than red back, and see what you think is worse. They bite. And it isn't an annoying tickle, it HURTS!

We have *lots* of mosquitos in Montana. Some suggestions off a posting on the office bb; Bounce Fabric Softener sheets - wipe across your skin and you're good to go. Another is taking B-1 vitimins daily. Mosquitos seem to be attracted to bananas, so refrain from eating them during mosquito season. Plant some marigolds, apparently the smell repels several insects. A classic is Avon skin-so-soft bath oil cut 50% with alcohol.

Good luck with avoiding getting bitten.

If you think mosquitoes are bad where you live you should try Alaska after the thaw. Some people say at least a few rare moose attacks might be caused by the little critters. Often when I left my truck I was swarmed so bad I had to run. It didn�t help. At least you don�t have sea lice to worry about. After a week of itching I always think they�re on me, the trouble is you never know. If you really want to sleep without fear turn on a light in the adjacent room while keeping your bedroom dark. In a few minutes or so any insect should have been drawn to the light. Close the door and you�re golden.

As far as your health goes you look fine and smile better so things can�t be all that bad. I�ve had headaches most of my life and learned to live with it. There�s only so much doctors can do, the rest is up to you. Never had too much of a thing for sweets though I do like certain brands of ice cream a lot. I�ve found the best way to control it is never bring it home. Healthy foods only. I never missed it. Of course I�m the kind of person who eats a box of ice cream till it�s gone so it only made sense.

ive spent a few summers in dominican repuplic. its like fing mosquito central if u dont have ac the little shits will go off on u if ur not prepared. anyways i know a few ways to stop them depending on how far u wana go.the avon stuff someone mentioned earlyer works theres also off spray id like to spray that just around i have no idea if it made a diference but it helped make me feel safer. theres those funky smelling mosquito candles things, bug zappers. but if ur waking up bitten theres one thing i know for sure that worked a mosquito net hanging over ur bed while u sleep i know that works for sureand was that pic photo shoped cause somthing look out of place either u look kinda small or megan looks large on top of that wall i dont know maybe its just me

Mosquitos--had to deal with them my whole child life, becaus eout house was placed so intelligently next to a freaking SWAMP. Actually for some odd reawson, even in swarms of mosquitos, i dont get bitten. THen again im also immune to things like poison ivy and sumac, so maybe my skin has something to do with it...The insects I hate most are ticks and wasps. Wasps are just mean sons a bitches that tried to invade my room by chewing a hole through my cieling and then coming in there in swarms, even though i thiught that wasps didnt swarm. I had around 4-500 in my room that day, and i honestly didnt sleep in there for 3 or 4 weeks. And ticks...WHATS THE POINT OF THEM?!? They just drop on you when youre mowing and freakin attach to you and transmit diseases...I definately hate ticks the most. Thats why I want a pair of flying squirrels to live in my house...tamed squirrels of course. Maybe they can route out the ticks and kill/eat/maim/decapitate/dismember the sutpid things. Maybe thats what you should get for your place, a pair of flying squirrels.

Perhaps the bites are not from mosquitos. I lived near GG park for awhile and had occasional spider problems, which is natural for spiders to seek warm environments. Several times I would wake up with several bites that looked like mosquito bites, but they were tiny spider bites. Your feline freind could also bring in fleas which love to bite, those usually show up as little bumps versus fat bumps from mosquitos. Mosquitoes are attracted by perspiration, warmth, body odor, carbon dioxide, and light. Another tidbit is that the female mosquito is the only one that bites. The male does not seek blood.

I agree with those who warn of other "critters" than the evil mosquito. We have LOTS of mosquitos here in the mountians of North Carolina (yes, I have all my teeth and DID NOT marry my cousin, a common misconception feuled by Jerry Springer!), but even here spiders or fleas can be the source of your woe overnight. YUCK! I hate the thoughts of any of them in my bed!

Not to ALARM you, but if your area lacks mosquitos, it is not uncommon for people to recieve spider-bites in the middle of the night. In fact, I have read that it is quite common. Sorry of the troublesome news... hope you catch & destroy the culprit soon :)
