Yes, it is quite amazing. What I laugh at is when people *cannot* use the correct form of "to," or "too." I've seen people give up and just use "two" like it's going out of style. At first I thought it just showed up in hastily written blogs, whose writer only partially remembers posting through a drunken haze. But that might be just an excuse...

Easy explanation: there are only so many sounds in the English language, and only so many ways syllables can be put together. Add to it our habit of borrowing words we like from other languages, changes in meanings of words over centuries of use, the constant invention of new words, and the fact that pronunciation, especially of vowels, has changed radically while spelling has remained fairly constant (rite and right weren't always homophones,) and you get the answer. Or as much of it as I could explain without using phrases like "syllabic constraints" and "the Great English Vowel Shift."
