It's Crap, But at Least There's Lots of It

So it turns out I'm not the only one who hates Ikea. Maybe it's sort of like witnessing enthusiasm for McDonald's in Zurich.

Then again, no doubt in my mind the Aussies are snickering at my pink Uggs.

but have you ever had one of those delicious Ikea hot dogs Sarah?

How come you don't like the store Sarah?
January 22, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterBigMan
AMEN SARAH!Ikea is a 'blue & yellow bruise' on the horizon. They are the walmart of furniture stores.

Funny, I thought I was the only one that had it in for these stores.

I don't think and ikea hot dog can beat a home depot sausage....

I don't even know what Ikea is.. I thought it sounded like a car lol.

That said, I sure hate it when global corporations use their infinite wealth to give me jaw dropping prices and the convience of shopping for all my basic needs in one place all wrapped up with a hastle free return policy.

Bastards :o)

I mean, I would much rather pay 10 extra bucks for a DVD at Suncoast.

Then again Walmart only sales edited CDs (which sucks largely and leads me to buy music elsewhere) yet you can buy South Park the movie for 9 bucks... makes no sense.

And I'm sorry, I would love to say that the little local college music store I occasionally go to has competitive prices but they don't. Average cost of a CD is about 18 dollars. hell, they were cheaper when they first came out. So give me iTunes and places like Circuit City for CDs. Then again I'm coming to find that iTunes does not have quite a few things I've been looking for. Disapointment much.

Eh, regardless there was a neat documentary on Walmart on some channel not long ago, showing both sides of course, how it kills mom and pop establishments, BUT how it adds MANY more jobs and growth to the area. So I'll come down on the side of advancement over nostalgia on this one.

wait, they sale hotdogs or furniture?

anyway, and yes I realize my above comments as usual have nothing to do with anything relavent to the conversation.

Weird...But I still wouldnt mind a cheap nightstand.

I can't stand Ikea. My mom used to take me there and spent 5-7 hours there while my head almost exploded from boredom. I'll have nightmares of boredom tonight, thanks Sarah.

I dislike Ikea and there swedish instruction manuals. But damn are there meatballs good...i also hate how they put those little arrows on the floor, and there are the people going against the arrows, and you have to kindly say to those people "WRONG WAY MAN!"
January 23, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterShrew
Damn, I love Ikea. I love that you can go upstairs and have some swedish meatballs after you're done buying a bunch of crazy furniture.
January 23, 2005 | Unregistered Commenterlangley
Don't worry, I hate it too...especially after I went there 5 times (twice to browse...once to buy...once to return...last to buy things we forgot) in one week....OUCH....it was painfull.

What's wrong with Ikea? I type this as I sit in my Ikea computer chair, at my Ikea computer desk in my Ikea furnished living room. I kid you not ;) Wow, I didn't realize so many people disliked Ikea. The one here in NJ is always packed, it's insane.

I actually have quite a few things from Ikea. Why ? Well because its cheap and with 3 small kids running riot it wont break the bank when they saw the legs off the table !!.

It looks good as well. Rule of thumb with Ikea is: if its made from 100% wood its usually OK but the MDF or chipboard stuff is ...well...cheap !

You only get what you pay for I guess !!

I'm sorry but Ikea rocks. Nice style / inexpensive furniture. Whats not to like? I cant wait til they open down here in miami in 2007.
January 24, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterCarsan07
I'm with you Sarah. Never did like Ikea. Quite frankly I could think of few things less appealing than multiple acres of cheap contemporary furniture. Now that I'm thinking about it, we do have one piece of furniture from Ikea: a highchair for the baby that was a gift from a "friend". When I get home tonight I'm throwing it out.

That high chair - is it the really simple white one with angular legs ?? If so I had one as well - its the best high chair I ever owned ! Simple, functional and easy to clean ! How can you say its so bad ??
January 24, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterMr Ikea
you know why I bought my furniture at Ikea? Because the only way up to my 2nd floor bedroom in my tiny apartment is an iron tight spiral staircase or a window. Ikea furniture could come up in boxes, be put together, used for a few years and then thrown out if it doesn't fit back down. Its cheap stuff but pretty good stuff - I like it, but its disposable.
January 24, 2005 | Unregistered Commenterjohn
In college a bunch of kids I hung out with thought it was trendy to dislike Ikea. They also never gave a reason why, which reminded me of this article. Maybe it makes Sarah feel important to pay more for furniture that looks the same as cheaper stuff. Maybe she likes to dislike things most people like to be "different". I dunno. I can only speculate, since she gave no reason in her post. BUT, did you know that Ikea makes double bunk beds?! C'mon, that is cool.. admit it! Okay, you don't have to. ;)
January 24, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterGuinevere
I love you Sarah! Geek girls rule! But, I also LOVE Ikea. We love Ikea so much that my husband and I drove 10 hours to D.C. from Atlanta with my mom's minivan and bought an entire condo's worth of furniture. But before we left home, we used Ikea's handy kitchen design software and designed our new kitchen. At the store, we ordered everything but the countertops and had it shipped home (wouldn't fit in the mini-van). Then, we installed everything ourselves. Yes, that's right we installed our entire kitchen ourselves. Now, talk about empowering!! Try doing that with a crappy Home Depot kitchen!! Most Ikea furniture is stable and sturdy and goes together extremely well. Better than anything designed in the U.S. (I think it's because they use the metric system). Of all of the furniture we have, we only had one problem with one incorrectly threaded screw. So, don't listen to those Swedes. They take for granted how beautifully designed these products are.

Pink Uggs? Just because Pam Anderson wears them doesn't mean they don't make you a FASHION VICTIM. As an Aussie, they are right up there with mullet haircuts, and flanelette shirts.

this hot lil skank will do anything to link you to sites full off adds and pop ups :)
January 24, 2005 | Unregistered Commenterahron
that's just wrong.
January 25, 2005 | Unregistered Commentersemajn
The biggest problem with Ikea is that most of their stuff is complete junk. It looks like it is made well but really it's crap. You get what you pay for.
January 25, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterMe
Ew...Ugg boots. I do not understand the concept of wearing big-ass boots when there's no snow on the ground. I hate wearing them when I *have* to! Now, a nice pair of stiletto-heeled boots, or a nice stacked-heel...that I would do. Dunno, just my preference.Sarah, it's ok, I won't hold it against you LOL.Peace,Gina*<3http://ginaplace.typepad.comhttp://ginaplace.textamerica.com

ya I got Ikea stuff and it broke within a year!!

January 25, 2005 | Unregistered Commenterrootsmart.com
I've never purchased anythging from Ikea, but I may. My current Decor is still "Early Batchlor Pad" I upgraded from "Late College Student" back when I got a regular paycheck, but not much progress since then.

I agree that most of that "comes in a box, put together yourself" stuff is cheap crap, but finding the money to buy really good furnature isn't easy.

January 30, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterJuan Whoknows
Now I'm not on top of the fashion world or anything, but aren't Uggs 'so last year'?

I love IKEA. Inexpensive and ok if you take care of it. You always get what you pay for, that's true of everywhere, not only IKEA. I even have a trip to Chicago planned in a few weeks so I can spend hours at IKEA. Sorry you hate it Sarah :)
