Palms and Deserts

I'm convinced the palm trees on my new street are trying to jump into the ocean. My block runs north to south, and sits just a few blocks away from the water. So, say you're looking south. The trees bend boldly west, practically uprooting themselves- or at least severing their trunks- in the process of getting just a bit more salty mist. I'm assuming it's the salty mist they like? Because it's not like they were just planted hastily... these dogs have been growing for like 50 years. Very odd.

In tech news, today was the transplants' first day in the new offices at G4TechTV. We had lots of orientation meetings, pizza, and copious helpings of caffeine as we settled into our new cubicles. I love mine- after bribing Dan into switching with me by way of extreme social engineering, I'm in a lovely corner unit with a window right across from Heather and the rest of the Unscrewed crew. Aces!

It's worth mentioning that last week Kevin and I spent some time in Las Vegas to visit family and attend BlackHat and DefCon. I had a great time, thanks in part to the large number of you who kept sending tequila shots to our table. A big high-five to the rest of you who came up and said hello sometime during the downward spiral of a productive weekend... yes, even you, Mr. Drunk Guy who insisted on hugging me. Because of your support, I'm glad I made the Def pilgrimage.

However, I'm going to be honest. I'm a HUGE magic fan, and so the highlight of my 5-day trip to the desert was undoubtedly the Lance Burton show at the Monte Carlo. How does he do it? If you haven't seen his shtick yet, do yourself a favor and book a couple seats during your next gambling adventure. You'll be amazed!

Good to know you had fun in Las Vegas. Also good to hear that things are coming along down here in Los Angeles.

A drunk guy hugged you? Weird, lol.

That's cool you got a decent cube. WE didn't have any windows in the last office I worked in (but that's what you get in a 100+ year old building that was in use during the 70's energy crisis) It was fun to walk out of the edit suite, though, and realize that it's no longer day out or that it had rained. Being in Milwaukee in the spring lead to a lot of the "Hey, when did it rain?" questions.

Good luck over there at G4TTV!

PS Would it be weird if I gave you a virtual ::hug:: (No.. I'm not drunk, just really tired.. Kevin, please don't hack me...)

Hi Sarah,

Question for ya...Now that you are settled into your new cube, will the SarahCam be coming back online anytime soon? It was kinda nice having that peek into your lives there.

Also, if you like magic as much as it sounds, Lance Burton can NOT compare to David Copperfield. I have seen David Copperfield twice and I can not figure out what he does at all! He is truly a marvel to watch. I felt like a little kid and I could not stop my amazement watching him. Do yourself a favor and see him the first chance you get. Also, pay the extra money and get yourself some good close seats.....he may pick you if you are close and on the aisle to assist in a trick like he did with me and my wife.

Congrats on the new cube.

I wish I could move cubes....They got me in a high traffic area at the end of a long hallway...so I'm getting whiplash from the constant interruptions. Of course, it doesn't help being an X-spurt around here, so I get both kinds of interruptions.

Of course, I hate moving in general...it would be a huge pain moving cubes....check out this picture...

And, that is considered pretty reasonable....

If you want to see some of the spaces in my apartment...check out entry #12 at:

Somewhere else I posted an shot of the computer room at work...though it doesn't look as bad now, a coworker took a bunch of the emtpy computer boxes that were cluttering the room up for a move.

I have no problems with Magic: The Gathering. I play it. But Yu-gi-oh? I guess it's because I'm a bit older.

And yes, I did think M:TG too when I saw the magic reference.

The tree lean west to follow the sun do they not? I know that's what most plants/flowers do so I'd assume trees would as well to a lesser extent.

hey sarah my g/f is a chef and she offered to cook you guys some good food if you guys get us tickets for the show!

Sarah... I can't believe you guys were at the Monte Carlo and I didn't get to meet you & Kevin. I work as a craps dealer there. I think I saw Yoshi there a couple of months ago (he walked by too quickly to say hello). Well, maybe some other time!

So... "extreme social engineering," eh? Punching him in the arm til he accedes to your demands? I would've thought you'd be more diplomatic than that.

3 thingsA) Im gald sarah had a good time over at Defcon and must sadly admit that i to have a bad addiction to magic, not the CCG, the actual performance of it.

B) I 2 am curious what you meant by "extreme social engineering" did you just say "Dan can i have your cubical" enough times until he finally gave in, or was there a more crafty approach to this.

C) This is just for the Magic players: STOP RAGGING ON YU GI OH. Ok sorry had to get that one out of my system. (im not starting a CCG war on sarah's site either so just take what i have said and if you dont like it email me.)
I think the trees are just following the sun, Steve. But then if you were a tree that was so close and yet so far from the beach, you'd probably be leaning toward it to get a better look too. :)

Good luck in the new digs, Sarah. I miss you all being on live, but at least we have some newly taped stuff to tide us over until you're back on the air.

I am no horticulturist… But I believe the trees are bent from the constant Off Shore wind blowing as they grow. When the wind dies down or stops they are no longer pushed and it is evident that they are not straight up any more.I bet its nature’s way of over compensating for the constant winds.

hey john the copperfield show was not great, it was ok but i wasnt blown away by any of his illusions, like he said he went to a far a way island and then cam e back in like 20 secs, and had a video camera set up in his "island" do we could see him getting there, yea well i was towards the back so i saw him crawling back to one of his platforms to reapear.

The wind (especially the hot Santa Ana's) kill the side of the trees that are exposed to it more. The side shielded by the tree grows more and eventually a leaning tree happens.

I went to the Lance Burton show about 2 years ago. It was amazing, I'm a magician myself so I knew how he did a lot of the stuff, but some of it just blew my mind. The best part was I was in the 2nd row, right next to the aisle, and he walked down the aisle and pulled a coin out of my hair, it was awesome.

Sarah (and Kevin),The best music scenes are on Sunset BLVD, especially on St. Patrick's Day (Dropkick Murphy's and Flogging Molly). Yes, walking is virtually illegal in Los Angles. The 101 and the 405 need to move faster than 2 mph. Another great place to visit is anahiem, it contains the happiest place on earth!!! DISNEYLAND. And if you guys want to pass me house come to Six Flags in Valencia, some of the rides there never cease to stop amazing me.
