Naysayers R Us

So I've learned a lot about how people act when you start up a blog. For example, if they don't like something you said, or they just don't like you, they'll post it in the comments section. And that's ok, because blogs aren't all about rosy flowers and praise and happy times. It's a forum for discussion... and as a new member of the on-air world, my skin thickens with each passing day.

But then you get the weird anonymous posts that are either 1) lewd, 2) mean, or 3) misleading.

1) Lewd is lame, and it's either underage boys, green-eyed monsters, or just lonely adults looking for some online fire. The third scenario is clearly the worst. Might I suggest a nice run on the beach?

2) Mean is just, well, mean. Who wants mean people around? I don't. And I know you don't.

3) But what really gets me is the dude that posts in the comments section as ME, and says things I would never say, just to upset my readers. What a bummer. There's really nothing I can do, because I said at the beginning of this little blog project that I wouldn't resort to turning off comments. I really like your comments, and I read them religiously. But what I can do is refrain from posting in the comments section at all. That way, if there's something posted by me, you can rest assured it wasn't me. I'll try to stay on top of taking out the other crap too. You guys don't deserve to read that shit when you come to my house.

Ok, now that we've cleared that up... here's my pic of the day (from my favorites vault). I really don't understand this one, or remember it for that matter. Long live the SarahCam!

I'm also trying to figure out if certain food consumption before bed increases instances of vivid dreams. I dream abundantly every night, but sometimes they're bad dreams. Aside from the obvious stress culprit, I think it might be what I'm eating. Thoughts?

I don't know about food, but Rum definitely shakes my dreams up a lot.

I don't post mean things but a run on the beach is a nice suggestion. I thank you and good day.

The only food that ever did to me was Pizza. I'm very wary of pizza before bed.
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered Commenternick
stupid lewd, mean people. I love this blog..a good vocabularly is worth a....errr...thousand words? Most of the time I skip the comments, anyways, citing your mentioned reasons. I don't remember about foods, but check out this paper I wrote on lucid dreaming if you're interested. Very cool stuff. http://stevedanforth.com/document/28

I've often heard that bananas can cause nightmares. Some artists I know always eat a couple before bed so they can have nightmares for inspiration.

Mean people suck ... :)

I'm sorry Sarah. :(

Cheese and chicken give me pleasent dreams nightly. w00t!
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterChris
Peter Pan Super Crunch does it for me (by the spoonful). In fact, my dreams were so vivid, I often woke up the next day with peanut butter smeared on my tee shirt.

try some potent marijuana, aka: the chronic. you won't remember your dreams, problem solved.kush

As far as people posting as you, you could either turn on IP addresses in your comments, so people will know if it's you or not, or you can use a bit of scripting to make sure nobody can post as you unless they're posting from your IP's.

Everyone dreams every night. But some people don't remember the dreams. And yes, foo would affect your dreams very easily. I have found that the more I think about something right before going to sleep the less likely I am to dream about it. I didn't know if I was clearing out the thought or what....Hmmm

yeah, got to watch out for those wet blankets out there that want to rain on your parade!

I wonder what Kevin eats before going to bed.

Excercise and working the left and right side of the brain that same day causes the brain to take a "Miller Time" break and generate dreams or nightmares. Of course, dreamstate usually happens minutes before waking up.

All these mean people suck comments remind me of a quote.."Mean people suck, and nice people swallow."
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered Commenterchezlines
Without a doubt, food can certainly intensify dreams, especially if you have been eating high carb/high sugar. There is an important thing to remember though, and that is that dreams always have a purpose (message). Good dreams or bad dreams, they are nothing more than manifestations of how you feel. Sometimes it is a reflection of turmoil; sometimes it's a refection of something good. Either way, you should take time to recognize what your dreams mean to you and then go on. You will quickly notice that the bad dreams will go away.

Why? Because you are consciously dealing with your issues and not suppressing them any longer. In no time at all you will rest better and your dreams will be calming and fun. Trust me.

You are having the same exact problem that Morgan had on her blog...except the people posting as her. As for the dreaming thing, theres always a bodily mechanism known as REM (the state in which people dream) recovery, when the body has been deprived of REM sleep and tries to make up for it, resulting in the most vivid dreams possible, except nightmares, which are always the most vivid, seeing as how they occur in stage 4 of sleep (REM is between stages 2 and 3). Normally really hot peppers such as habanero or sorreno peppers give me really odd dreams, or just stuffing myself full to the point it hurts. Hope that helps you out.

Death to assholes! Ah ha ha ha ha.

Kevin eats some fresh tuna before going to bed.

Im sure you knew thered be negative posts. hopefully theyre outweighed. I think blogs are a wave of the future. Its a new way to communicate thats awesome. Your work on the show has progresses quite rapidly. If you ask me its because while were all dazzled by a little glitz we value integrity above all.

Sorry about all the crap you have to put up with, Sarah. It's gotten so bad on Morgan's site (for most of the last week, she's been flamed over her use of profanity and insulted by some vulgar idiot posing as Adam Sessler) that she's had to turn off comments AGAIN. (For that matter, comments are off at Megan's website - wonder what's going on?)

Mean people really do suck, especially when they use the Internet as their license to abuse other people. But what can you do?
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterLee
By the way, anybody know what happened to Cat's blog?
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterLee
It's just like I told you in my email the other day, there will always be those people. Anonymity has a way of producing courage otherwise never to be found. Your true fans/friends will always be there to support you. Loved the curls tonight!:)
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterLarry
I've had a similar issue. Had to cut out my late night snacks because I'd end up having bad dreams. Once I stopped grabbing a pre-sleep snack the dreams cut out (at least the bad ones).

Could be coincidence, but I think it had a hand in it.

Cheers!

Hey Sarah,Ferget those A-holes out there I think you are one of the reasons TSS is still number 1 how at my place. As for dreams I can eat any thing that does notr move and if it moves what 5 minutes and then eat it so my dreams are always way out there thats what makes sleeping fun.Ps Loved the new dew then again you would look good in anything.
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered Commenterbiggie
Sarah, block the IPs of the offenders. You can do that :)
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterVicki
Well I know I have weird dreams every night. I can honestly say that I don't have normal dreams. Something is off everytime. Like I dream I live in a total different house (one I have NEVER seen before) but parents are the same (hehe I don't live at home anymore which is even MORE WEIRD).

I dream about my current house but my TV or bed is always in a different place.

Is this normal?
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered Commenter4t0mik
well, I guess I could just agree with all the "mean people" comments, because they're true. Unfortunately, just as in real life, there are zeros on the internet hopelessly pursuing some misguided sense of "cool." Probably the only thing that really could be done is to log IP's and report the bastages to their ISP's, but that only gives the knuckledraggers what they want, attention, and some sort of cachet they think makes them notorious because, Dude, I got banned from Sarah's blog...I'm sooo hardcore. Personally, I'd either turn the commenting off, which it what I did on my site (but no one knows I have one, so it really doesn't matter) or just ignore the clutter.

And yes, the type of food and how soon prior to sleeping you ate it can gave a big effect on the quality and content of a dream, but still, nothing is worse than having the alarm clock ring out right in the middle of a good dream...
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterMatt C
well, it's good that you're not letting those comments bother you that much.

and as far as food consuption before sleeping..well, stay away from cheese. haha, i have had some bad nightmares as a result of some cheddar.
May 29, 2003 | Unregistered Commenterjesse
definitely avoid pepperoni pizza after about 9 p.m. -- always gives me technicolor freaky LSD style dreams (which i *really* like!)

Hi Sarah,

I wish I could remember the last time I had a dream....I think it was literally at least a year or more ago.

It's a shame a few vocal idiots can ruin a pleasurable experience for everyone else, but your blog isn't the only place it happens unfortunately. As far as the food and dreams, I'm afraid I can't help you out there. I haven't remembered my dreams in years.
May 30, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterLarry
By the way, the tuna melts probably don't help, girl!
May 30, 2003 | Unregistered CommenterLarry
Sarah - I have been watching TechTV for about six months or so now and have learned *a lot*. I really enjoy your spots and think some of that is because you are not thick skinned or cynical - but fresh and excited. Please, as someone who tends to be cynical and jaded - keep it fresh!! Thanks and have a GREAT day!!

Food does set off chemical reactions in our bodies, so it is a good possibility that food does have an effect on our dreaming and brain activity during sleep.

You might want to look into the side effects of that wierd named tea you've been drinking lately. It's s'posed to give you hallucinations and such. Seriously ...
